Crecy was the first major battle of the Hundred Years War. An outnumbered English army (which included many Welsh soldiers) defeated a French army led by Philip VI. Fighting from a strong defensive position, longbowmen inflicted terrible casualties on charging French knights and demonstrated the technical superiority of their weapon.
