New Faction Overview: Milan

Sometimes a change is as good as a rest and it was well past time to work on completing the faction overviews for the vanilla Medieval 2: Total War Campaign. The latest faction overview covers Milan. Many players avoid this faction as their starting position looks desperate and the truth is that you will be fighting multiple enemies from the beginning but avoiding Milan means missing a very rewarding challenge with some great units like their powerful crossbowmen and city-recruitable heavy cavalry.

You can view the rest of the faction overviews here.

Just out…..New Empire: Total War screens

We have 5 new electric pictures relating to Empire: Total War for you! One is a piece of concept art, and the other four are more naval battle screenshots, two of which show the prototype interface for naval battles. Check them out in our Gallery.

And here is a snapshot of my favourite of the new images:

New Empire: Total War Q&A

A new Q&A for Empire: Total War has been published at the Total War Blog. It deals with naval combat in some detail, and a few tantalising snippets regarding India and how players will get there.

Many thanks to Primo for spotting this.

Res Geste Imperia Is Seeking New Members

Res Geste Imperia is a mod for Medieval Total War 2 that is seeking new members for their team, especially 3d modellers. The mod begins during the early birth of Rome, You will have fight off Raging Barbarians, Mighty Greeks and The Devastating Tribes of Gaul from a very early stage. With a small and untrained force, Rome’s existence seems slim.

Res Geste Imperia will be a complete remake of The MTW2 game, converting it back to the year 284. This mod will consist of completely revamped units, Building, Campaign Maps, Interface and so much more.

To learn more about the mod, including where to go to join, start with their topic in the TWH Modding Forum

Mod Apachean 1870 by Kungfuserge: New Gallery For User Mods on M2TWH

Kungfuserge has been working away on an interesting little mod for the Americas campaign in Kingdoms. It aims to convert certain units for Spain into units based on the US-Indian wars. It’s not meant to be historically accurate but rather fun to use. You can find out more about his mod (and the download) here. Do note that it is still a work in progress. As a little reward for Kungfuserge, we have given him a mini-gallery in our galleries section, which you can find here.

Here is one example of the work that has gone into the mod:

Please note that regular forum participation with regard to your modification is a minimum requirement to receive a gallery on M2TWH for your mod.

Pros and Cons of Siege Equipment

While surfing the forums, I came across a thread entitled “Pros and Cons of Siege equipment”, posted by Zufios . Inside were some excellent thoughts by forumers, but one post by Smileyman007 stood out. Going extensively through each of the pieces of equipment available to commanders, he rounded off as follows-

Like all things in the Total War series, there is no one “best” way to win. There are strategies that work better than others–and some that don’t work at all–but all good strategies can be effective if done properly. I’m not going to tell you the “best” way to win as there really is no cookie-cutter answer. But I will say that as long as you keep the pros and cons in mind and you have the right information about your enemy, you will likely be successful in your sieges. Tailor your use of rams, ladders, and siege towers to the situation and you will be victorious.

Join in the discussion, and let your thoughts be known on siege equipment!

M2TWH Forum Party XI – 2nd December 2007

It’s time for another forum party this weekend and it’s the turn of M2TW. So don those gauntlets and sharpen your swords because you’ve got your fellow TWH’ers to battles. Visit the forum party thread to check out times, to see who else is going and ask any questions.

New Empire: Total War Q&A

Read the Q&A and discuss it on our forums.

The original post at Total War Blog can be found here. Many thanks to TinyPiesRUs for spotting it.

Congratulations Andrew Dunn and SubRosa

Congratulations to our two newest Cherubrim: Andrew Dunn will be filling the position of Empire: Total War News Contributor and SubRosa will be filing the position of Rome: Total War Content Contributor.

Please give them a warm hearty welcome here.

On Assassins

This is the title of the latest strategy article submitted by EnemyofJupitor, continuing his excellent series on agents and their uses.

The assassin is usually used prior to an invasion, taking out military leaders, diplomats and buildings in order to put the target nation at an immediate disadvantage. Even in peacetime, merchants can be made to disappear, priests of a different nation found dead in their churches, and a seat on the College of Cardinals can become available. The effects of actions such as these can have benefits to you – the enemy economy looses an outlet for florins, inquisitors can appear to find out why your rival is slacking in religious duties (Keep in mind you’re going to be taking over that settlement later), and the last gives your priests the chance to shine.

Check out this excellent article here.

Kingdoms Update

Creative Assembly staff member senseitw has posted an official announcement that CA are working on a Kingdoms update.

Some of you questioned why we couldn’t simply release a quick fix for these issues. In actual fact it isn’t the fixes themselves that take the time to produce. Most of the time goes into checking that the changes don’t have knock-on effects and that the balance of the game both on the campaign map and with individual units remains as it should.

It’s a bit early to talk about release dates and actual fixes, though we will get some information for you as soon as we can. CA Oz has opened up a good sized window running into early next year to produce this update for you, after that they will resume their commitment to their next project until its completion. We will of course keep you informed on progress of the update as we near release.

I would like to personally thank everyone who has posted on our forums, sent me PMs and instant messaged me over the weekends throughout this process. Your feedback is invaluable and always most welcome.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m looking forward to it! 🙂

New Kingdoms Faction Overview: Kingdom of Jerusalem

There’s another Kingdoms faction overview ready for your perusal here. It’s an exciting campaign and if you liked the film Kingdom of Heaven, you’ll love the feel & atmosphere of this faction. They have awesome cavalry and their infantry isn’t far behind.

You can also have a look at the other faction overviews available here.

Do pop into the forums to let us know what faction you would like covered next.

M2TWH Forum Party X Report

The battles are done & dusted so here’s a little report on how the 10th M2TWH forum party went. We started off with a 2v2 battle. Christians against Muslims. Ben & I were England & Spain. Friesian & Wolfpsyco were Egypt & the Turks.
Pic 1

Initially, Ben & myself took the hillock on the Tannenburg map but Friesian & Wolfpsycho set up camp in the forest in the distance. I attacked Wolfpsyco on our right and Ben took on Friesian on our left.
Pic 2

I’m moving into position here. Ben delayed his advance to see if we could tempt them out of the woods.
Pic 3

I was able to reduce Wolfpsyco and Ben mostly routed Friesian’s forces but the cost was very high.
Pic 4

Friesian & myself had a 1v1 after. He set up on a hill and I attacked. Splitting my cavalry proved to be a very foolish move.
Pic 5

Proof that Friesian hasn’t lost his touch!
Pic 6

We all had a good time and the next party will be for RTW.

Only two battles in total but we have learned the hard way not to use Tannenburg unless you like not having a clue where your units are or what they are doing.
It was a very intense battle and it was a shame that m2tw crashed on me which crashed the battle before we could finish it.

Battle 2 was a 1v1 on the Spanish plains map. Friesian had a nice big hill which he used to good advantage. I had 6 cavalry to his 3 and split them with the hope of occupying his cavalry on one flank and flanking his infantry on the other flank.
My infantry routed and I couldn’t get my cavalry out of harm’s way before they got attacked by spearmen!

Good games all and well played. It’ll be RTW’s turn for a party next.

Empire: Total War In The News

Total PC Gaming magazine feature an exclusive Empire: Total War preview this month. Within their Empire-covered pages is an interview with lead designer James Russell and some great screenshots. As it is an exclusive preview, you’ll have to get your hands on a copy of the magazine.

Totalwar.com did release the following update though:

We have one amendment to their printed release date for Empire: Total War. The game is not scheduled for release in March 2008 and isn’t currently 75% complete, as their Complete-o-meter indicates. Stay tuned to TotalWar.com for the official release date at a later time!

A March 2008 release would have been just heavenly but sadly we’ll have to wait a little longer than that. Drop into our Empire: Total War Forum to give your say on the latest news and when you think it will be released.

M2TWH Forum Party X Sunday 18th November

Scipii wants to have a forum party this weekend and who are we to say no! Visit the forum party thread to check out times, to see who else is going and ask any questions. I know I’ll be there to defend my proud 3-50 record!

Strategy Section Maintenance

I’m doing a little general maintenance on the Strategy section, so if you notice the odd discontinuity, then don’t worry. If it causes you any problems, then please post them here.

Thanks for your patience.

New Kingdoms Faction Overview: The Apaches

It’s time for some hollering and whooping. The Apache Braves are at the gates and they appear to have picked up some Old World technology on their travels.

For a full overview of this unique faction, read here. There are a number of big differences to the standard campaign, especially on recruiting of higher level units and we have all the details here.

Creative Assembly interview with Pro-G

There’s a very interesting interview with Creative Assembly’s Studio Director Mike Simpson and Lead Designer James Russell about Empire: Total War on Pro-G. It gives more information on what we can expect in the released game and how the developers are progressing with it.

A few snippets:

There is also a greater emphasis on range weapons and cover, so for the first time we have battlefield buildings that you can send units into, who will take up positions at windows and fire from and to other destructible buildings.

We’re maybe 50% of the way through, so over the next year we’ll be gradually showing you more and more as we get through it.

Latest Kingdoms Faction Overview: Ireland

The latest Kingdoms Faction Overview is now ready for your perusal and this time we’re featuring the Irish faction from the Britannia campaign. They are an interesting faction to play because their infantry is nowhere near as strong as other factions but they do have a few very powerful units, such as Mounted Calivermen and Horseboys.

You can read the overview here and visit our Kingdoms Faction Overview section here.

Spooky happenings on TWH forums

There have been funny sounds and strange sightings on the TWH forums. Do drop in and help us to drive the evil demons away by posting your thoughts in this thread.

Welcome back to TWH Chonaman

Chonaman is joining the TWH staff to give us a hand with RTW moderation & content. He has worked for the heaven before and was most recently working for Rise & Fall Heaven. He has a huge amount of experience with Rome: Total War and is very approachable. Please drop in to congratulate him on our forums here.

New Kingdoms Faction Overview: Byzantine Empire

Count Mummolus decided to give us a hand out by copying the source html from the Teutonic Order faction overview and adapting it to suit the Byzantine Empire. This was a very welcome surprise and you can read the overview here.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Irish faction overview coming next week. No complaints about the biased choice please 😉

Total War Heaven: Looking for new staff

We’re looking for new people to help out with staff duties on Total War Heaven. Full details are available here but the short version is that we are looking for:

  • Total War Heaven Download Reviewers
  • Rome: Total War Heaven Content Contributors
  • an Empire: Total War News & Content Contributor

If you’re interested, please send an email to yakcamkir and tell us a little about why you think you are best suited to the post. Do mention any experience you have that may be relevant to this role. It doesn’t have to be an essay but four-line applications are unlikely to be successful either.
Good luck.

Empire:Total War FAQ

If you visit the official Total War Blog, you can read the Q&A released by CA on Empire: Total War.

Below are a few snippets. Discuss these in our forums here.

Will religion play an important role in Empire: Total War?
It’s clear that the Enlightenment caused a few headaches for some of the clergy of the time. With that in mind, religious issues are still relevant in Empire, but less important than in Med II. The Pope won’t be dropping Lord Nelson a line asking him to retake the Holy Land, but religion does play a part in social order and diplomatic relations.

Will the game be moddable?
Of course. We’ve always wanted to encourage our modding community and help them out. There’s been a lot of great work created for previous Total War titles and we’ll be looking to encourage more of the same for Empire.

Will naval battles be fun and easy to command?
We’re working hard to get a balance between ease of use and depth in naval combat. We’re confident that we’re heading in the right direction and it’s already fun to play naval battles in the office, even roping in members of the CA staff who haven’t been working on the naval stuff, so it can’t be that hard to pick up!

Britannia Campaign Guide!

FrogBeastEgg on the TotalWar forums has been working on a guide to Total War: Kingdoms. The first part has been released and it covers the Britannia Campaign and it is very comprehensive. Anybody who has played the expansion will find this guide very useful. You can download it here

Three New History Articles

Once again Bloodswan is ensuring that our coverage of Mongol history is of top quality. Many thanks to him then for sending in two articles. The first deals with the Mongol invasions of south-east Asia and examines why the Mongols were not as successful as they had been previously. The second is an article on the attempted Mongol invasion of Japan, which thanks to weather and the bravery of the defending Japanese, resulted in failure.

Kor likes to cover periods of history that may not be familiar to all our visitors and his article on the Hussite wars is no exception. Do please be careful when being a heretic, being burnt at the stake is a common occupational hazard.

Forumer Reviews for Kingdoms

Some of our forumers also did reviews for M2TW: Kingdoms and I have added them to the official review. They were submitted by: Count Mummolus, SirDracko and blaster fodder. Many thanks guys.

HeavenGames’ Staff System: A Revamp

Source: The HG Blog

So now that things have been settled with HG’s identity, it’s time to go on to the fun stuff: the staff system! Woo!

It’s been discussed in a previous blog post that HeavenGames doesn’t operate as efficiently as it could from a staff perspective. A lot of issues have already been dealt with in the past several months, but there are two substantial problems that must be taken care of. First, there is no effective way to ensure quality and consistency of work across all of our sites. Second, we do not have dedicated jobs in a number of support capacities, including marketing, sales, and the like.

Revamped Staff System
The owners have thus discussed the issue with the HeavenGames staff and have come up with the following system:

As you can see, HeavenGames will still be run fundamentally the same: the Exco – chaired by the CEO – makes all of the network-wide administrative decisions and Seraphs work under the Exco as site administrators. What will be added to the system will be a Seraph Liaison and Support Departments. First, the Seraph Liaison…(Read more!)

Very First Kingdoms Faction Overview

It’s taken a lot of playing with the unpacker and re-writing html but the first (and not last) faction overview for Kingdoms is ready. I hereby roll out the red carpet for our new M2TW: Kingdoms Faction Overview section and the very first article in it, an overview of the mighty Teutonic Order. Feel free to drop into the forums to give feedback on the article and what faction you want covered next.

Update to M2TWH Kingdoms Review – Music

Our resident musician & awesome staffie EnemyofJupitor has written a very good review of the music in the expansion pack. You can read it and the rest of the review here.

One of Eoj’s favourite bits is the “War of Kings” track and here is what he had to say about it:

There are not many gaming tracks that earn a place on my iTunes, but this is one of them. It is, however, piqued to my favourite track of Kingdoms by a piece that appears in both the Teutonic and Britannia campaigns, as well as on the Kingdoms trailer. Written by Jeff Van Dyke himself, it is titled ‘War of Kings’, and sends shivers down my spine when I hear it – it’s that good. Horns, male voice choir, urgency, percussion solo, this piece has the lot.

There’s more updates to come in the review once I’ve finished playtesting the Brittania & Holy Land Crusades campaigns.

Today on the forums….

General_II dug up an interesting thread for us today. It seems that a fellow by the name of thomash808 predicted Empire: Total War way back in November 2005, almost two years ago. He even got the name of the game bang on. Shame he didn’t stick around to share his Nostradamus-like prophecy skills with us further.

PC Zone Empire: Total War Preview published online

The PC Zone preview of Empire: Total War which was previously only available in PC Zone magazine has now been published online in CVG. Read it here.

A few snippets for you to drool over:

Vessels will be able to let fly with chain shot, grapeshot, musket fire and cannonballs, which you can aim at your foes’ destructible sails, decks and/or hulls so they sink faster than Robert Maxwell.

You can also opt to grapple and board enemy ships for exciting fights on-deck with muskets and sabres, any captured ships becoming part of your fleet, and thus available for use in subsequent battles.

Yes. You read that right. Capturing ships is going to be part of the game!

Also, buildings will now be visible on the map without you having to click on the settlements that they’re in, so you’ll be able to click on them and upgrade directly from the map. Apart from the added convenience, this means you’ll now be able to see at a glance how developed a region is without trawling through a menu to investigate, and in addition use your armies to attack and destroy individual buildings.

So we must bid farewell to the city construction screen? And proper order too. Being able to see the state of your province at a quick glance will be of great benefit to players who tire of labouring through the old city construction screens.

More M2TW: Kingdoms News

Total War games go from strength to strength because:

Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms has been nominated for a BAFTA in the Strategy and Simulation category. The winners of the British Academy Video Games Awards will be announced at the ceremony on Tuesday 23rd October 2007 at Battlesea Evolution.

Also, the fourth gameplay video from the Americas Campaign in Kingdoms has been released and can be downloaded here

Two New History Articles

Now that I’m back from holidays, I can begin to start catching up. First up is a very thorough & in-depth overview of the Mongol Invasions of China by Bloodswan. Next up is a piece I wrote on King John I of England which looked at his character and he certainly was as colourful a character as any who sat upon the throne of England with petty vengeances & murdering of relatives to his name.

From Our CEO Socvazius…

Comes the following announcement for all Heavens:
Source: The
HG Blog

After considerable deliberation, the owners have decided that one major inhibiting factor for HeavenGames’ prosperity is the simple fact that it doesn’t have a clearly defined identity. It has always been a site about games, but that is far too vague for the development of any clear goals and the effective marketing of the site.

We have thus discussed the issue with our staff and decided that we should make HeavenGames a site entirely geared towards community. At its core, HeavenGames always has been about building the best communities possible, so it only makes sense that we devote all of our resources to that service…(Read more!)

3 New History Articles

We’ve got three new history articles in and they are all from Bloodswan. The first deals with the Battle of Kulikovo which was the first major Russian victory over the Mongols. The next article is a biography of the remarkable Admiral Yi Sun-shin, who makes Nelson seem like a tugboat captain with the sheer scale of his accomplishments. The third article is a quality overview of The Mongol invasions of Korea. I didn’t know very much about the era so I was eager to have a read of it myself.

There’s more great articles in the pipeline. Keep your eyes peeled for them being newsied here.

Unit Cards Tutorial

Primo has made an excellent thread on how to make new unit cards in M2TW. If you’re an aspiring modder and want to learn how to do it, then have a look here.

Total War Heaven goes YouTubing!

Yes, Total war Heaven have launched a YouTube Channel of our very own! You can see our videos either there or on our Video Page.

You can also see our first strategy article making use of videos here.

I hope you enjoy the new multimedia we have access to. 🙂

Crazed Ewok’s Resignation

It is with great sadness that we announce the resignation of Crazed Ewok as Seraph of Medieval 2: Total War Heaven. As Seraph he has been primarily responsible for the running of the site since he took over along with GloryofSparta about 18 months ago and has been a huge success. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours, both at HG and in all other aspects of his life.

Please thank him for his service in this thread.

M2TW Gunpowder Only Forum Party IX Sunday 16th September

Seeing as Empire: Total War has been announced, it’s only right and proper that we should hold a Gunpowder Only Forum Party to get people into the swing of things. It’s quite simple: you can only select units that use a gunpowder weapon of some sort. It should certainly shake things up for those who have mastered the traditional art of total war M2TW style. Pop into the Forum Party thread to let us know if you’ll be there.

TWH Review of M2TW: Kingdoms

I’ve been playing Kingdoms since it came out and put together a review of the expansion which hopefully will whet the appetites of those who haven’t bought it yet. PC Zone & PC Gamer gave the release a 90% rating and I have to say……..read the review and find out for yourselves 😉

Here’s what I had to say about the graphics & game performance:

Needless to say, the game looks beautiful. I’m lucky enough to be able to run the game on high settings and the quality of the detail & animations is staggering. While you would expect this to impact on game performance, I couldn’t help but notice that the campaign game runs noticeably smoother than in M2TW. The battles show no change in performance with speed being roughly similar to vanilla M2TW battles.

Britannia – Total War Mod

One of our forumers, Primo is looking to create a new mod for Kingdoms. In his own words, his aims are to:

This mod is planned to tweak and extend the Britannia campaign in M2TW: Kingdoms.

It will include new units, lots of reskinning, tweaks to stats and(maybe) the map extended to Norway and Normandy.

So far, I have added a new unit, Highland Gunners, To help Scotland match England on Gunmen, and I have renamed almost all of the regions on the map.

cjones87 has already done some re-skinning work and you can view screenshots here. Primo is also looking for people to help out so if you’re a coder, modeller, skinner or mapper and you’re interested in joining in then have a look in this thread

M2TW: Kingdoms Forum Party VIII Sunday 9th September

It’s been a while since we had a forum party and with Kingdoms just out, it’s the perfect time for a Kingdoms forum party. Check out the details in this thread if you’re coming along. Pack your pikes, claymores & longbows because there’s English invaders to be kicked back to where they came from!

M2TW Patch 1.3 released as standalone patch

Patch 1.3 is out but for folks hoping to have hotseat enabled or the same unit rebalancing as Kingdoms, they are going to be disappointed as the patch is primarily intended to allow online vanilla M2TW compatibility between people who have installed Kingdoms & those who have not.
You must have patch 1.2 installed before installing 1.3!

You can download it from:
Gamershell
Boomtown
Strategy Informer
Extreme Players
Gameborder

CA release a note on Kingdoms Compatibility

There’s information on totalwar.com which will be of interest to folks looking to download Kingdoms. The gist of it is that you can only use a downloaded version of Kingdoms if you downloaded the original M2TW. If you bought a disc copy of M2TW, then you must buy a disc copy of kingdoms.

Now that the launch of Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms is almost here, there are a few things that you should know about compatibility between retail and downloaded versions! Because the Kingdoms expansion will use core game elements from your Medieval II: Total War game, it is required that you use the same distribution method for purchasing Kingdoms as you did in purchasing M2:TW. In clearer terms, if you purchased M2:TW at a retail location then purchase Kingdoms at a retail location, if you downloaded M2:TW from Steam then download Kingdoms from Steam, and so forth. We and our partners at Steam, Direct2Drive, and Digital River are working hard to prepare the downloadable versions and expect to have all available on the retail release date.

Have you Modded Medieval 2?

Wikiman from Creative Assembly has posted on the forums with some advice for anyone who is having trouble installing Kingdoms.

If you have modded any part of Medieval II you will have to do a full reinstall of Med 2 before installing Kingdoms. This includes manually altering any files within the Med 2 folder.Kingdoms will install on top of any revision of the game (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3). In order to run Kingdoms your Med 2 will be upgraded to 1.3.Hope this helps.-wikiman

For those of us that have made small changes to our games, we’ll have to do a full re-install in order to get playing rapidly, rather than topping up the swear box when you get an error. 😛

Empire: Total War Update

There’s been a lot of discussion in the new ETW forum and lots of news in the Empire: Total War Discussion thread.

First up are previews from IGN and Gamespot. There’s also a preview of the prototype naval battle interface to look at and drool.

Also Andrew Dunn has posted a load of details on what we can expect in the new game:

  • The campaign map will be larger. It includes Europe, North and South America, North Africa, Central Asia, India, and Indonesia.
  • You will be able to build colonies. It will make a difference, whether you settle in the wilderness of the Americas, or whether you can use preexisting infrastructure in India.
  • All infrastructure built within a province, will be represented on the Strategic Map. You can upgrade buildings, by clicking on them on the Strageic Map. There will still be a capital though.
  • Enemy armies can plunder or conquer buildings within provinces.
  • Revolutions can happen, leading to the separation of countries.
  • You can change the form of government between: absolute monarchy, constituional monarchy, and Republic. This will directly influence how you can deal with revolts and how fast you develop new technologies. Other factions will treat you according to your form of government.
  • Taxes can be set seperately for Nobles, Burghers, and Peasants.
  • Generals can now directly recruit units. They will join them after a few turns, instead of being recruited in settlements.
  • Historical generals can appear.
  • Infantry can occupy buldings. They will automatically take up defensive positions and fire out of windows/doors.
  • Wind will play an important role in the battles. You can set the sails of your ship according to your desired speed. You can choose between three types of ammunition, geared towards damaging hull, sails, or crew respectively (probably round shot, chain shot, and canister shot).

  • Kingdoms Screenshot Posting Race Won By…….

Well done to blaster fodder who won the Kingdoms Screenshot Posting Race with this. great screenshot of Native Americans using some distinctly “old world” technology. It’s a fairly barren looking landscape too isn’t it. He also posted an amazing shot of about 20 troops getting torched by flaming ammo of some sort.

If you have Kingdoms screenshots of your own that you want to share, then please post them in this. thread.

    New Faction Overview: Denmark

There’s a brand new faction overview up and this time it’s the “Viking” faction of M2TW, the Danes. They are an interesting faction with strong melee units and a good starting location if you’re prepared to be imaginative. You can read the overview here. Read all the other faction overviews here

They will have M2TW: Kingdoms as well as RTW Gold (RTW & BI) & RTW Complete (RTW & Alexander) available in their store. This is especially good news for euro-zone buyers with the current exchange rate as there are now some very good bargains available on Steam.
The downside is that these are only available in North & South America

    Empire: Total War Announced

We all know that TW like to work in a two-game cycle and have one revolutionary game followed by another evolutionary game before starting out again with another revolutionary game. Now we have confirmation that this cycle is going to continue.

It’s official. The next game in the TW series will be Empire: Total War.

Here’s what we know so far:
-It will be set in the 18th century.
-It will feature the American war of independence.
-It will feature the industrial revolution.
3D naval combat. Yes you read it right!
-Buildings will now be outside cities to encourage players not to button up inside cities, i.e. say goodbye to endless sieges.
-Completely enhanced combat system to take account of the changed nature of warfare.
    -Release date: 2008

Previews & other info can be found by clicking on the magical link.

You can discuss it to your heart’s content here. Thanks to Andrew Dunn for the news.

    82 Brilliant M2TW: Kingdoms Screenshots on M2TWH

We’ve opened a brand new gallery just for all the released screenshots of M2TW: Kingdoms. There are no less than 82 screenshots in total and some of them are gobsmackingly gorgeous. This particular one is my favourite. I just had to set it as my desktop background!

Only 12 days to M2TW: Kingdoms Release Day

There are two new articles on Gamespot to drool over.
One is a Q&A with Creative Assembly game designer Penny Sweetser.
The other is a preview of the expansion everybody is waiting for.
Thanks to Alexander332 for the heads up.

The Final M2TW: Kingdoms 3D Unit Preview At TotalWar.com

TotalWar.com have released their final 3D unit preview which you can view here. Last weeks unit was the Turkish Crossbowman unit. Before that it was the rather cool looking Samogitian Axemen. What’s with the upturned collar!

We also have a very interesting blog which players need to sit up and pay attention to. The entire balance of the game is going to be changed. 2-handed sword units are about to be turned into very good shock units as they will all get the “armour piercing” trait.

An example of one of the units that has had major changes to its stats are the Zweihanders. In update 1.2 this unit had the following stats:

    Attack: 14
    Charge bonus: 6
    Attack attributes: none
    Armour: 7
    Defense Skill: 4
    Cost: 680

In Kingdoms their stats have been changed to:
    Attack: 15
    Charge bonus: 9
Attack attributes: armour piercing (only counts half target armour when attacking)
    Armour: 5
    Defense Skill: 8
    Cost: 520

Cavalry units are also going to be smaller and their stats decreased. They will still be very powerful when charging the flanked of engaged infantry and more manoeuvrable but the days of sweeping all before you with frontal charges is over.

Horse archers will have smaller unit sizes but increased missile accuracy.

For 2-handed axe & polearm units, I quote the developers:

2 handed axe / polearm units – these guys have been made tougher in melee, and have had slight tweaks to their attack stats. They can now survive better in melee and deal out lots of damage on the charge. Think of them as infantry versions of heavy cavalry. Vulnerable to missiles and cavalry charges.

Spear & pike units are going to be buffed a bit to be able to resist other infantry types. They will also be far more effective against cavalry from the front.

Missile infantry have been weakened in melee but their missile accuracy is increased which should make them a lot stronger from range and therefore more in need of protection from supporting troops.

In the Teutonic campaign, the Teutonic Knights will have stronger troops but cost & the requirement to convert a region to Catholicism before recruiting them is going to make them harder to get. I think mercs could be important in this campaign.

In the Americas campaign, it looks like the Spanish will have smaller units but they will have 2 and sometimes even 3 HP to compensate.

    New Faction Overview: Hungary

It’s time for a new faction overview and the Hungarians are the folks under the microscope this time. They are known as a challenging faction to play with limited infantry but reasonable cavalry later in the game. You can read the faction overview here. The list of faction overviews available for all factions is here.

    A Further New Strategy Article

This time, it’s Alman155 who has written an article on a strategy called The Russian Rampage.

Bring two dvor cavalry to use their arrows on the enemy’s archers as they can be a nuisance later on. The other two should be harassing the enemy’s cavalry. Don’t be afraid if your missile cavalry take some loses or if they engage in hand to hand combat as they are more then capable of handling themselves. With the constant horse archer harassment and cannon fire your enemy begins to get annoyed and therefore becomes reckless. Most likely they will try to send their remaining cavalry at your musketeers underestimating their combat skill and the fact that dismounted dvor can own some infantry. When they send there cavalry they usually go strait on in a desperate attempt to kill your cannons. This is the time when you take your berdiche axmen from the flanks and hit them from the back. Their cavalry is dead.

read the article here or visit the strategy section here.

    Another New Strategy Article

I’ve been busy again, this time explaining Lanchester’s Laws of Warfare and how to apply them to Medieval 2: Total War to maximise your kills to losses ratio.

It should be noted that combat in M2TW is a mixture of Lanchester’s Linear Law and Lanchester’s Square Law. Therefore, care should be taken to avoid getting into “linear” battles if possible. A meat grinder on the walls is all well and good, but there isn’t the opportunity for fancy tactics to increase your efficiency factor or commit large numbers of units to the battle. It is basically about four of your men against four of the enemy (depending on the width of the wall).

    New Strategy Article

I’ve done one this time. I’ve re-written my article on “Thinking Strategically on the Campaign Map” for Medieval 2: Total War.

Long-term Objectives are not the be all and end all of your campaign and whether you hit them, fail them, exceed them or go in completely the opposite direction because the Poles had the cheek to attempt to make you a protectorate, it doesn’t matter. They are merely a pointer to help you plan your more rigid shorter-term strategy and keep it pointing in the right direction. Shorter-term planning is only a little way forward, whereas the Long-term Objective takes you a noticeable step towards your Campaign Goals. An example of Long-term Objectives is in the initial part of the English campaign, where I aim to take British Isles and have a decent foothold in northern France (normally three or four castles) in the first 20-30 turns (it usually takes 15-20, but I allow 20-30). This gains me a powerful economic centre on the British Isles which is relatively easy to defend with naval superiority in the seas in the surrounding area. I would also have two or three fair-sized armies which have some fairly experienced troops and a leavening of the crack troops that in another 30 turns will make up the bulk of my armies.

    You can read it here.

    Official HeavenGames CEO Blog Opens

    Source: The HG Blog

(I’m pensive about so many things in this photo)

    Hey everyone,

My name is Socvazius; I’m the new CEO of HG, but I’ve been around for quite a long time. I started visiting HG in late 1997 (at age 11), joined the staff in 2000 (my first article, a masterpiece by any standard), joined the executive board in 2003 (I have nothing to say here but I wanted to add a parenthesis for consistency), and became owner in 2005 (when I turned 18). Over all that time, I have been webmaster of 6 Heavens and have done about every possible job.

Offline, I go by the name Sergio Prado and I study history at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. I am currently working in marketing at Vivendi Universal on Empire Earth III and World in Conflict. I love philosophy, history, physics and politics among other things, and to compensate for my nerdy tendencies I’ve been known to karate it up as well as do all the other things that college students do. Oh yes.

Anyway, this is my blog! While I will surely use this blog for my own narcissistic ramblings, I intend it to be used mostly to keep everyone up to date on what’s going on in HeavenGames, especially the stuff that pertains to my job: management, PR, and all the other fun parts of a gaming website. In fact, I do have some news that you guys might be interested in. For the past couple months the owners have been discussing a major revamp of how HG operates, including its staff management and exactly what services it will provide to the community. We’re zeroing in on a finalized plan, so keep your eyes peeled for a freakin huge article that’ll be way too long to be worth reading!

Until the next post my friends,
    Soccy

    M2TW: Kingdoms confirmed release date!

It’s official. The eagerly awaited expansion pack to M2TW is coming out at the end of August.

First up there’s the review of the game. Kingdoms Scores 90% In PC Gamer! You’ll have to buy the September edition of the magazine to read it but apparently it’s a four-page review. Not bad going for an expansion. This is quoted directly from www.totalwar.com

We were delighted to learn that Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms has been awarded 90% in PC Gamer’s exclusive 4-page review. Awarding the expansion pack with their coveted “Must-Buy” accolade, they commented:

“This feels like four expansion packs rather than one muscular bundle.” They also advised that “Only the weak will not be buying this expansion pack, and the weak deserve to be trampled.”

Elsewhere in this must-own magazine, Medieval II: Total War took the prestigious 5th position in The Top 100!

Look out for the September 2007 edition of PC Gamer as it marches into stores near you.

There are also two new 3D unit previews at www.totalwar.com. First up is the awesome looking Ritterbruder unit which is a mounted Teutonic knight. It looks amazing. Here is what they had to say about it:

Rarely does one so holy appear so terrifying on the field of battle, yet these elite knights, some with horned helmets, cast an almost demonic visage. From a combatant’s perspective there is no holiness about them, as any who move close enough to admire their exquisite weaponry and armour, feel an unnatural dread rising inside them.

You can also see the Saethwyr, which are early longbowmen. This is what CA have to say about them:

Saethwyr are the finest longbowmen the army of Wales has to offer. As the inventors of the longbow, the Welsh are among it’s most skilful proponents. Though weak in close combat, they’re deadly at range. Able to plant sharpened stakes in front of their position to keep enemies at bay.

There’s a load of posts in the Official Total War Developer Blog so if you haven’t bookmarked it already, you really should do it now.

We’ve also updated the TWH FAQ on Kingdoms which you can find here.

    New History Articles Flooding In

The new history articles are coming in thick & fast at the moment and we have even more in the pipeline. First up is a faction overview history of Hungary by Bloodswan and then we also have an article on the Battle of Bouvines by Kor.

The Samurai are at the Gates

Bloodswan has been busy typing and there’s a companion piece to his previous article on Mongol Weapons which is an article all about the varied & mysterious world of Samurai-Era Japanese Weapons.

    Two new history articles

Bloodswan has sent in an article on Mongol Weapons complete with pictures for illustration. It’s very good and I learned a good bit about bows from reading it. You can find it here.

Santos I wrote an article on Tolerance, Intolerance, and Persecution for college and was kind enough to also submit it for the perusal of the TWH history professors too. It touches on Christianity, Islam and even Buddisism. You can read it here.

    Preview of M2TW: Kingdoms

There’s a first look at the brand new Kingdoms expansion on Eurogamer. The previewer doesn’t have a bad word to say about it and there’s a lot to look forward to. Lucky sod. Playing Kingdoms for a job…..

Thanks to Andrew Dunn for passing on the link.

    M2TW Kingdoms Update

There have been a few updates in the Units Preview section of the Total War website.

    The new units are:
Khassaki – elite cavalry units belonging to the Egyptians (I think).
Mounted Apaches – an Apache horse archer unit.
Priests of Quetzalcoatl – these chubby looking fellows are fearsome warriors and it’s more than likely that they’ll either inspire friendly troops or frighten enemy troops similar to druids from RTW.

There’s also a CVG interview with designer Dan Toose and senior programmer Dan Glastonbury from Creative Assembly Australia, where they reflect back on Medieval II: Total War and whats to come in the Kingdoms expansion. You can read that here.

    THE INAUGURAL M2TWH TOURNAMENT

We’re having a M2TW tournament this weekend. It’ll be on Sunday 8th July and you can find out all about it and register in this thread.

We’re hoping that it will be a good chance for M2TW players to test their skills in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere ahead of the upcoming ladder. You don’t need to be a “brilliant” player to come along and enjoy a few games in good company. Everything will be organised for ye. All ye need to do is play!

    Patch Help Thread Update

Marcus Orentius has updated his thread offering help on installing M2TW patches and using the data unpacker. If you have been having trouble with installing any patch or using the unpacker, then look in this thread.

Marcus tells me that a guide to the battle editor will be added in the near future, so keep a lookout for it.

    The latest M2TW: Kingdoms Update

There’s a load of new appetisers on the table for TW fans.

Firstly, TW have updated their official blog with more information on the Brittania campaign and the relative strengths & weaknesses of the different factions. You can read that here.

There are two new units featured on totalwar.com. The first one are the Mayan Hornet Throwers, who throw Hornet nests in combat and the other are the Horseboys, who are an Irish light cavalry unit. The Hornet Throwers could be the Head Hurlers of M2TW!

Totalwar.com have also updated their Kingdoms page and added new pictures. Check out the second shot of the Meso-American warriors painted in green. You can find that here.

Thanks to EnemyofJupitor who hasn’t been set up on NewsPro just yet for the info.

New Faction Overview and M2TW: Kingdoms Preview Video #2

The next faction overview is up and this time it covers the Poles who are a great faction for those who love good cavalry. The Polish Nobles alone are a brilliant unit. You can view the overview here.

We also have a second M2TW: Kingdoms video to drool over. It gives a preview of the Teutonic campaign in Kingdoms. I can’t wait!!!!!! You can find that video here.
Many thanks to TinyPiesRUs for the link.

    M2TW: Kingdoms Update

There’s more Kingdoms news out now! Details on the Teutonic campaign have been released and you can read all about it here. The maps and screenshots featured are actually for the Brittania campaign but the info is simply Teutonic.

The gameplay is going to be quite different to what we have become used to. Religon is going to become more important than ever before. Have a look at these snippets:

The Teutonic Order is the most unique faction to play, because of their religious foundation; they play quite differently to the other factions in Medieval II. First of all, there is no family tree. The faction leader is the Grandmaster of the Order known as the “Hochmeister”. Faction members can’t marry or have children nor is there a faction “heir”. A suitable leader for the faction is selected only when the Hochmeister dies.

The Teutonic Order’s method of unit recruitment is driven by religion; Teutonic Knights will only be available from regions with high levels of Catholic belief. This means that the Order will need to utilize mercenaries if they are to expand quickly, while the use of priests is crucial in order to ensure that any newly taken lands convert to Catholicism as soon as possible.

The Teutonic Order will also be restricted to building castles. The only way they can get cities is by capturing them.

The Lithuanians start off as a pagan faction but may get the opportunity to convert to catholicism which will change their unit roster:

The Lithuanians utilise a new pagan religion game mechanic based on numerous temple chains that when built, unlock recruitment of elite religious warriors. The Pagan religion can move along one of three temple chains. Each chain provides unique benefits such as increased trade and better farming. Each chain has three levels, with each level providing units of greater strength, culminating with a special pagan unit unique to that temple chain. These elite units will help the Lithuanians withstand the relentless aggression from the Teutonic Order but if Lithuania starts to buckle, they will be given the opportunity to convert to Catholicism. This conversion will unlock opportunities to construct larger cities and new building types. This will come at the cost of losing the benefits associated with pagan temple chains and their unique pagan units so when the player reaches this crossroads in the campaign, they have a significant decision to make.

Gamespot have a huge selection of stunning Kingdoms screenshots which you can drool over here.
Thanks to Jumbalaya for the tip off.

    Four new history articles

Kor has sent in four great articles on the Welsh-English wars of the 13th century, the Hundred Years War between England & France, the Swiss-Burgundian War of the late 15th century and the downfall of Charles the Bold as well as a faction history of France.

Many thanks to Kor for sending these in. You can view all history articles on the History Section Main Page.

Ultimate Writer Competiton – Deadline Extension

I’m extending the deadline for Round 3 of the Ultimate writer competition by a week (until midnight forum time on Sunday 17th June).

If there are any more budding writers out there, you have five days to get your entries in to myself.

    Here come the Nazgul!

No, you can put your bows and muskets down, they’re only doing a taxi service for our two new staff members: SuicidalScotsman and EnemyofJupitor from over at BfME2H.

SuicidalScotsman is going to be our new download administrator and run the modding forum, while EnemyofJupitor is going to be working on a multiplayer ladder for Medieval 2: Total War and running the multiplayer forum.

    Congratulate them both here.

So it seems that Strategy is King

Having added up the results from our latest poll, it seems that the largest group of you play Medieval 2: Total War for the strategy, with other big groups playing because of the graphics and the time period.

The new poll is on the proposed new name for the Total War Heaven community forum.

More Kingdoms News – A 3D Look At Greek Flamethrowers

Everybody is excited about Greek Flamethrowers and it’s now one of the units on TotalWar.com’s 3D unit page. Here is what they had to say about them:

Greek Fire is one of the most terrifying weapons available in the Medieval World. The Byzantines first used it in naval battles, but soon found applications for its use on land. Consisting of a small hand pump connected to a container, it is capable of burning even underwater and sticks to its target, while being almost impossible to put out.

Also available are previews of Followers of Perkinas, Guachichil Warriors and Gwent Raiders.

There is a video on the Brittania campaign that you simply must see. It shows both campaign and battle footage. You can find that here. It’s a little on the big side (minimum 32 megs) so dial-up folks beware.
Gamershell have the same video in better quality but much bigger file size (159 megs) which you can download here.

    New Faction Overview – Russia

There’s a new faction overview for Russia on the site. Russia are a great faction to play if you like cavalry but beware, the Mongols & Timurids will come calling before long. You can also see the other faction overviews which are all available here.

Here is a snippet from the new overview:

The Russians have a history of absorbing foreign invaders within the vastness of their country. It was no different in medieval times when Christian Crusades and Mongol invasions had to be dealt with. The Russians have huge distances between the cities to cope with but this can be as much of a blessing as a curse as their enemies also have to deal with these distances. While Russia is not well endowed with quality infantry units (especially in the early stages), the Russian cavalry is of excellent quality, perhaps even the best cavalry roster available in the game. Being a Christian faction will not protect you from the whims of the papcy as orthodox Christians are seen in the same light as pagans, muslims & other heretics. Defending Russia from multiple crusades is a very real possibility.

    Gaming in different cultures

Zen has been asked, along with various other people to write an article on gaming in different cultures in the world. If his is the one that gets published, HG will get a significant amount of good publicity.

How do you think gaming is viewed in different cultures outside of the USA? StarCraft is very big in South Korea (so much so that they have musicals and dramas based on the game), MMOGs are very popular throughout Asia, and strategy games such as Knights of Honor, 1701AD, etc. are very popular in Europe; North America seems to be more about First Person Shooters – or is that all just a myth?

Seeing how we have a diverse staff and audience I thought I’d ask your views here. What sort of differences can you see between different cultures when it comes to gaming?

Please post your views (and your location) here.

New History Article on Battle of Othée

Kor has sent in a brand new article on the Battle of Othée which you can read here. This is a follow up from his earlier Siege of Maastricht article since this is the battle where the rebels who had attempted to siege Maastricht were decisively defeated.

The bloody battle of Othée, the great military victory of John the Fearless, duke of Burgundy, was the direct consequence of the row between the bishop of Liège, John of Bavaria, and the rebellious citizens of Liège.

Ultimate Writer Competition Round 3 – Nine Days to Go!

Good luck with your entries, everyone!

    Another Faction Profile!

We have another faction profile up, this time it is the Turks. Click here to see it, or here to see our faction profiles page.

There’s something clinking in the attic

It is in fact a brand new article from SirDracko giving a decent overview of Medieval Armour and it’s development over time.

Kor felt unable to sleep at night knowing that his article submitted for the writing comp was only 97% right so he updated it and sent the fruit of his labours to us. You can find the updated article here.

Thanks again guys for those great submissions.

Ultimate Writer Competition Round 2: Congratulations Psycho Dan!

    The Massive Kingdoms Update

There’s a brand new blog and video available on IGN. Look down the bottom for the blog and video.

TotalWar.com have updated their units profile with a few new units. Look out for Spanish Dragoons and Dievas Guard.
Here is what they had to say about Spanish Dragoons:

Spanish Dragoons are a powerful force to be reckoned with in the new world. Equipped with lighter more easily used muskets than Musketeers, these men ride into battle on trained cavalry which are not scared by the loud reports of their masters firearms. Armed with a steel breastplate for protection, these men are a boon to Spanish hopes of total conquest of the new world.

There are also a number of new screenshots for you to drool over. Be warned that these files are big. Dial-up users beware.

According to Gaming Target, we can expect 9 new agent units as well.

As usual, Wiki have a page giving a quick overview of the expansion.

That PC Blog have a preview of the game with more screenies to get excited about.

Heavengames 10th Birthday Tomorrow (15th May)

That’s right, our wee little online community will be washing his dirty knees, combing his hair, putting on his best pants and having a little party on the forums of the oldest still-open Heaven on Heavengames, Age of Empires Heaven.

There is a very simple ground rule:

One post per person, where you can wish everyone well and maybe say a little about what HG has meant to you over the years, so make sure you say all you want to in that. Do not abuse this rule under any circumstances whatsoever. You may, however, edit your post if you think of anything to add.

And it is only open for 24 hours so it might be an idea to type your post in advance.

You can find this awesome party thread here.

    Saladin is at the gates!

It will take a considerable time to download for most folk. Up to 3 hours for 512K ASDL connections, 5 and a half for those on 256K ASDL. The lucky ones with superfast connections will wait a mere 45 minutes.

Be patient, it’ll be worth it in the end!

Some folk seem to be having problems getting the patch to work. It is well worth saving the patch onto your computer to avoid having to go through the lengthy download procedure. If you want to be certain of avoiding crash on startup, then uninstall MTW2, reinstall and then run the 1.2 patch.

Ultimate Writer Competiton Round 1 Results – Congratulations Kor!

Yes, I’ve finally got round to putting the results up, they can be found here, along with the details for Round 3, which will end at the end of May.

If you’re still busy putting the finishing touches to an article for Round 2 then I’ll take a day or two to get them all uploaded anyway, so I’ll still accept it if it’s a little late (I’m not like the teachers that won’t accept any piece of work that’s handed in more than one second late 😛 ).

Update to TotalWar blog and info on TW: Kingdoms units

Total War have released information on some of the new units we can expect to see in TW: Kingdoms. Start looking forward to Calivermen (an Irish gunner unit), Canons of the Holy Sepulchre, Burgher Pikemen, Ceitherne (Irish warbands) and the Constable of Jerusalem (a potentially awesome Crusader cavalry unit). View them here.

The total war blog has been updated with a Q & A for both Kingdoms and the eagerly awaited patch. You can read it here. Some snippets to look forward to:

    -Boiling oil is back
-Some of the expansion units will also be available in the vanilla campaign. Will the Byzantines be getting flamethrower units I wonder?
-CA have confirmed that the two handed unit bug will be fixed in patch 1.2 as well as future releases
-Kingdoms will be very modder friendly

    Tannenburg & Medieval Architecture

It’s a new week and we have two new articles from Sir Dracko and Legio Low. Sir Dracko chose to write about the legendary battle of Tannenburg. Read all about it here and Legio Yow wrote a very unique article on Medieval Architecture.
Thanks for the great submissions guys. Apologies for the delay Sir Dracko as it took a while to get the non-standard characters to work.

Two New Interviews About M2TW: Kingdoms

There are two very interesting online interviews giving lots of information what we can look forward to in M2TW: Kingdoms. You can read them here and here. We’re discussing these interviews in our forums right now.

There are also some previews of the expansion with screenshots from IGN, GameSpy and GameSpot.

Hordes of articles in our history section.

The M2TWH history section has been invaded by a horde of articles and unlike the Mongol hordes, these are very welcome. Bloodswan has submitted no less than 5 articles on…big breath…a faction history of the Timurids, a look at Vlad Tepes, better known as Vlad the Impaler and three battles involving invaders from the east and Psycho Dan has submitted one on the 3rd Crusade which is the famous Richard the Lionheart – Saladin crusade for those who were not paying attention in history class.

The third crusade article is available here.

The faction history of the Timurids is available here.

You can read about the battle of Ain Jalut here.

You can read about the battle of Kalka River here.

You can read about the Sack of Kiev and satisfy your bloodthirsty needs here.

Ultimate Writer Competition – Round 2

Round 2 of the Ultimate Writer Competition has opened, entries should be sent to yakcamkir.

Round 1 will be marked as soon as possible.

    Expansion Pack Announced!

You heard it right! The first expansion pack (hopefully the first of many), Medieval 2: Total War Kingdoms, has been announced by The Creative Assembly!

The year is 1258 and England has emerged as a superpower, with a firm grip on the provinces of the British Isles. However, as the English, your forces are spread thinly with the threat of rebellion looming large. Wales and Ireland are poised, ready to rise up and exploit the exposed English provinces. The Scots meanwhile, are squeezed between England’s expansion to the North and the growing Viking presence that threatens their shores. These five kingdoms are set to battle for supremacy in a fast-paced, war strewn campaign that delivers huge battles for high stakes. – TotalWar.com

In the coming days we will hope to have much more information on the expansion pack, but in the mean time, you can go here to read the full scoop!

Also, please come to our Medieval 2 discussion board to speculate about the latest chapter in the Total War series!

HOWTO: Install Medieval II: Total War patch 1.1 and use the unpacker

Marcus Orentius has typed up an excellent guide to using the unpacker with patch 1.1. It can be found here.

    Ultimate Writer Competition – Reminder

Just a reminder that the deadline for Round 1 of the Ultimate Writer Cometition is midnight forum time on Saturday March 31st.

If you wish to enter, then Email an article to yakcamkir.

M2TWH Forum Party VI: 1st April

Recruit those boyar sons and their dismounted cousins. We’ve a golden horde to stop here!

Check out the times and let us know if you’ll be there in the forum party VI thread.

    The Third Crusade

Psycho Dan‘s first article describes the crusade that featured Richard the Lionheart and his great rival Phillip of France. I’m pleased to say it won’t be his last. Click here to read it.

Mongols are coming – New history article on battles of Liegnitz & Mohi

Bloodswan has sent in a sterling history of the battles of Liegnitz & Mohi, which were the high tide mark of the Mongol invasion of Europe. It’s great to get articles which look at different areas of history and this is a high benchmark for others to match. You can read it here.

My sincere apologies for getting the author name wrong. It’s hard to keep up with all your submissions 😉

    M2TWH Forum Party V: 18th March

There’s a chill in the air so everybody should be indoors playing M2TW this evening. It will take place on Sunday 18th March. Sorry about the short notice but I’m only just back from hols.

Check out the times and let us know if you’ll be there in the forum party V thread.

    The thoughts of CA Staff…

Have you ever wondered what the CA Staff thought about Medieval 2: Total War and how they play it? Here is your chance to find out.

Peter Brophy: Castles! My campaign strategy is to pump out as many units as possible as fast as possible and overwhelm the opposition. My empire always seems to collapse after a while though. Perhaps I should try a more balanced approach…?

    The Turks!

dsmi1 has sent in a Battle Strategy article for the Turks.

Naffatun! Love them. 380 florins a go is excellent in my opinion. Get two, or ten. Two is probably enough though. Use them well and you can raise your chances of winning considerably. Don’t and you have wasted 760 florins. 23 Armour Piercing (AP) missile attack is unreal. Get them around the side, throw the bombs and create havoc. They devastate enemy morale too. If your opponent lets them go unchecked you can tear the main line up quick smart. I couldn’t say enough good things about Naffatun, and their price is amazing. If you cant afford your Hashishim special units, go for some Naffatun!

Read it here, or visit our Strategy pages here.

Announcing the Medieval 2: Total War Heaven Ultimate Writer Competiton!

We are proud to announce the first M2TWH competition – the Ultimate Writer Competition!

This is a writing competition with a Medieval 2: Total War flavour. There are five rounds and a different piece of writing will be needed for each one (obviously). Each entry is marked out of twenty and the overall winner is the person with the highest cumulative score. All entires should be sent to yakcamkir marked M2TW Competiton. Only one entry per person per round will be accepted (I know there are people out there who can write five good articles in a month, but if that’s the case then just pick the best).

Details can be found here. If you have any questions, then please ask them here.

Round 1 closes at Midnight Forum Time on Sunday 31st March. Good luck to all entrants!

Holy Romans & Trouble in Flanders

We have two new articles in the M2TWH History section. One is an overview of the Holy Roman Empire by SirDracko, which you can read here and the other is an overview of the Flemish cities featured in the game, Bruges & Antwerp by Kor, which you can read here.

Read all our history articles by clicking here or on the funky updated navbar to the left.

    He’s churning them out!

EnemyofJupitor has sent in another great article on agents, this time he discusses the use of spies.

Cities, however (especially the bigger ones) are easy pickings for your spy teams, especially higher level ones. So, if you see a big garrison in a city, don’t bother going head on straight away- train some spies, give them a couple of missions to get their levels up and then hit the city with multiple 5+ spies. You can make a city throw off the rulers and replace the huge garrison with (hopefully) a smaller and easier rabble to defend the walls. That’s when your army comes a-knocking; sustaining marginally less casualties than if you’d just gone bull headed.

Read it here or see all of our strategy articles here.

    French Chivalry Crushed at Crecy!

Another Historical Battle article, which you can read here.

    Two new Campaign Strategies

The Campaign Strategy page now has two articles.

EnemyofJupitor has written an excellent article on the use of priests.

You will find your favour going up especially when you’ve got priests everywhere spreading the faith. You have to execute heretics quickly before they spread Heresy in your lands- a big no-no- and the rating usually goes sky high when you have all your regions on at least 85% or upwards Catholicism. As likely as not you’ll need to put multiple priests in the area to make it go quickly, depending on the piety ability.

It’s well worth a read and can be found here.

Gaius Colinius has written an equally excellent guide to playing as England.

You may get a mission or be tempted otherwise to take Bruges until you have secured the British Isles. Avoid this temptation but I do stress that this is my personal preference. While Rennes has the Atlantic to its rear. Bruges has French to the south and the Holy Roman Empire to the east once they take Antwerp. Towards the middle of the game, the Danes will probably take Antwerp. You really don’t want to be in a war with these three factions when the home countries are not yet secure. You’ll be getting warnings from the Pope and all that so stick with Caen & Rennes until you are ready to move all troops to France. If you don’t already have a family member in Caen, move a young one across.

Read it here, or look at the Strategy Page to read any of our strategy articles.

    Historical Battles

Our Historical Battles section is now open for business with articles on Bannockburn and the murderous Battle of Shrewsbury, a precursor to the Wars of the Roses.

    Read all about them here.

More to come shortly! Please feel free to email Gaius or myself with accounts of your favourite battles too.

    In search of staff

With the sad resignation of Jax, M2TWH and RTWH are in need of a downloads administrator. We are looking for someone who is somewhat active in our forums and has knowledge of both Medieval 2: Total War and Rome: Total War. We’d also like this staff member to have some experience in modifying the games (ideally, both).

If you’d like to apply (and intend to follow through with the process), please send your forums username, how long you’ve been at TWH, why you think you should have the position, any contributions you’ve made so far and anything else you’d like to say (experience in HTML/CSS, what modding work you have done). Contributions to our site so far will give you better chances of being accepted. Please send your application to Crazed Ewok.

    Thank you and good luck!

    Jax is resigning!

That’s right, I am resigning! My reign (under Cray and GoS, of course) was a little short lived at TWH, but I enjoyed my time here nevertheless.

Visit this thread to find out more and say bye to me.

    M2TW Forum Party IV

It’s that time of week again when we put on our plate armour and gear up for a session of M2TW gaming. It will take place on Sunday 4th March.

Check out the times and let us know if you’ll be there in the forum party thread.

Brand New M2TW History Section Opens

It is my great pleasure to be able to open the brand new M2TW History Section. This is where you will find articles relating to the period history featured in the game. We already have a few articles up and will be posting a few more soon.

You can find it here or on the funky updated navbar to the left.

Many thanks to Porphyrogenitus, Andrew Dunn and Archdruid for submitting articles already.

    M2TW Voted Best Australian Game

Medieval 2: Total War has been voted the Network Ten Australian Developed Game of 2006 by the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia.

Congratulations to CA for this great achievement and may any future releases follow in its footsteps.

The full list of winners can be found here. Thanks to Marcus Orentius for the tip.

    Medieval Forum Party

As mentioned in previous news articles, last weekend’s forum party experienced a great response. Therefore, here is the followup – another weekend full of fun and games!

Make sure to check out the forum party thread to get the whole scoop!

    Another Faction Page Done!

I’ve added another faction page. Since we have four Catholic factions already, I decided it was time for a change.

Therefore, I present: The Byzantine Empire.

I’ve also added the King’s Purse to the existing factions and neatened up the tables slightly.

    Please welcome…

Gaius Colinius and D Furius Venator! Our newest staff members, highly deserving of their positions, come into our ranks filled with fresh ideas and a willingness to work. The cherubs are going to be jointly administrating the History section and will also serve as moderators for our History forum!

Please give them a great big welcome here! Don’t forget the confetti!

    Downloads Survey

HeavenGames has started a survey in regards to the Downloads section. The management began this survey because they would like to know what you think about the Downloads section. It’s a simple survey – just answer 6 or so questions.

If you use the Downloads system, please check it out. You’ll be helping HeavenGames by doing so!

    Forum Party Wrapup

Today marks the end of the festivities across all Total War Heaven. As for our beloved Medieval 2 Heaven, it ended Saturday night, and I’m pleased to say it was a hit!

I participated, and in one specific battle, I was brutally slaughtered by forummer Dricus Frisii. He and many other forummers were present for several games. In total, we had at least a 600% increase in player number than our first forum party.

Did you miss out on the fun this weekend? Well, don’t worry. We’ll be holding a forum party again really soon. Be sure to check the site every day to see when the next one is!

Don’t worry about your skill with the game. You can always defeat me.

    Gamespot Tournament

Gamespot, massive presence on the internet in gaming, has uploaded a new video of their “City Under Siege” tournament. The battle depicted takes place on an exclusive map created by The Creative Assembly for the final round of the tournament.

You can download the video here or stream it directly from Gamespot by going here. Enjoy!

    Medieval Forum Party

We’re hosting our second forum party (hopefully beginning a more regular schedule). If you’re interested in playing Medieval 2 with your friends from the forums, be sure to show up!

The date is February 10th. There are two times:
    8 AM-1 PM EST (1-5 PM GMT)
9-whenever PM EST (1-whenever AM GMT)

Be sure to check out the party thread if you’re new to parties!

Also, be sure to check our sister site if you’re interested in playing Rome: Total War!

    Another new strategy article

Gaius Colinius has written an excellent article on the basics of battle strategy. It’s easy to read and a great general summary of the fundamental concepts of the game. I’ll also point out that in my newbie days, I made every single one of those mistakes.

Check out all of our strategy articles on the Strategy Main Page.

    A new strategy article!

I’ve been catching up on my inbox lately (exams getting in the way of the important things again) and therefore have a very good article from weisiguo entitled Cavalry Defence – Dynamic Sally Attack. It’s a good read and a good strategy to minimise upkeep costs in campaign.

I can promise another article soon. Also, you might want to check out all of our current articles on the Strategy Page.

    Amendment to HG Moderation Policy

HG has made a change to moderation policy. According to Zen, we have:

    Retired the parole system:

Members currently permanently banned with parole pending in the future will be eligible for parole; members permanently banned from now on will remain permanently banned. Parolees who incur an offense will be permanently banned.

Since this means less chances are available, I suggest everyone takes the time to re-read the Code of Conduct.

Banner Contest Comes to a Close

It’s February 1st, and we’re no longer accepting submissions for our Total War Heaven Logo Contest. We received many great entries and we’ll soon be posting the winner.

If you submitted a logo, be sure to check back in the coming days, for you could win a cool HeavenGames T-shirt! Even if you didn’t enter, be sure to come check out our forums to see the new logo!

    New Poll

Our first poll, asking “What are your initial impressions of Medieval 2: Total War?” is now closed, and judging by the result the game is a welcome addition in most people’s PC game collections!

The Best Game Ever [918 votes]
    Fantastic [1554 votes]
    I Like it [667 votes]
    Average [127 votes]
    Forgettable [29 votes]
    Urgh [31 votes]
I’ve ordered it but it hasn’t arrived [152 votes]
I’m not getting it [86 votes]

Our next poll asks what you’d like to see more of, content-wise at M2TWH. Vote away!

    Withstanding Sieges

… is the title of our latest strategy article, submitted by Mebertus.

The primary implements in defending against a siege are castles. Hopefully, if you’re defending, you’ll be inside one, because they are far superior to cities for defense. That is why it is often smart to place your castles on the outside of your empire, and your cities within. This layered approach works well in the early game, when settlements can still be converted. That is one of the cases for an early quick advance.

First, when conducting the defense of a castle or city, it’s important to know the strength and depth of your defenses. There are several methods of doing this. I suggest using your eyes, because clairvoyance is hard to learn.

It’s a very in-depth article and well worth a read. See it here.

January Create-a-Calendar Competition Winners announced: Congratulations Lacedemon!

So January’s competition is over and the winner is Mariusz Kozik (aka Lacedemon) from Poland. Here is his excellent entry:

    January's winning entry

February’s competition is currently underway, the closing date is January 31st. Entries should be sent to Medieval2TotalWar@yahoo.com.

Here is the fun part – we are giving YOU the opportunity to design each month’s themed image. There is no restriction on what kind of image you can submit, so feel free to capture screenshots, build models, take photos, dress up your friends, make ice sculptures, go to Medieval re-enactment days, or anything else that comes into your creative minds. You will have until the 31st January to work on your images, so take your time over them to be creative and original. The only thing we ask is that your image be themed around the featured calendar month – February. When coming up with ideas, you may wish to think about what national holidays and events are coming up (for example, Valentines Day). Also consider the weather for that time of year, and the ideas you associate with that given month.

    TWH Forums Logo Contest

Total War Heaven is holding a contest! The winner will have his/her banner displayed on all the general TWH forums. The contest is open to anyone, and the winner will receive a genuine HeavenGames T-Shirt! Check here for the rules of the contest, and good luck!

    Spanish Faction Page is up!

The faction page for Spain is now up!

You can find the four pages done so far here.

    Two more Faction Introductions

Having sorted out a few coding problems with the faction pages, I’ve finally got on with adding some new information. I have now added introductions for the Byzantine Empire and the Turks as well as updating the gameplay section of the existing factions tot he new format. With any luck, gameplay pages for Spain, The Byzantine Empire and the Turks will come in the next week or so.

    Check it out here.
